Today´s trip is to the picturesque Krkonose foothills. The area is renowned for its historical and artistic monuments and natural beauty. We will visit one of the most beautiful of these– The Kuks Hospital, a unique baroque complex and national cultural monument, nestled in a quiet part of the Upper Elbe Valley.
Kuks was built by a Czech nobleman, Count Frantisek Antonin Spork (1662-1738) originally as a spa, which at the beginning of the 18th century was comparable with the European spa centres of the period and at the same time became a place, where politicians, scientists and artists met. The bathhouse and chapel were built between 1692-1695 on the left bank of the Elbe. In the year 1711 the chateau was added, which held an extensive library. The architectural design of this part of the premises was most probably the work of an Italian architect G.B. Alliprandi, who designed the construction of the hospital, Holy Trinity church and crypt on the right bank of the Elbe. Construction was completed between 1710-1712 by Pietre Antonie Torre. The hospital was established by count Spork for 100 poor elderly servants of the Hradiste estate. The main attraction of Kuks is its gallery of sculptures dating from 1712-1731 situated in front of the main entrance of the church. Its creator is a sculptor of late baroque period in Bohemia, Matyas Bernard Braun.
Špork was a sharp critic of social relationships and a promoter of religious tolerance. In support of this he published books using his private printer. Because of these books he got into a conflict with official religious circles, which led to confiscation of the library and his being accused of heresy.
Also Spork was known in particular as a benefactor of significant artists,,but mainly Matyas Bernard Braun, and his name is permanently linked to the creation of Kuks.
We will see the former main hospital ward of Kuks hospital, and the Holy trinity church, where we will get to know the history of the members of the Spork family, who are buried in the church, starting with the founder of Kuks, F.A.Spork.
We will continue our tour by visiting the baroque pharmacy called ‘At the Pomegranate’, where there is an exhibition of the Czech pharmaceutical museum of Charles university in Hradec Kralove.
Here you will learn about the development of pharmacies from the Baroque period to the 20th century.
There you will be able to admire the artistic beauty of pestle and mortar, reliefs, paintings and pharmaceutic pots.
After the visit to Kuks hospital we will walk by the Elbe for approximately 3 km to Stanovice, which is in easy walking distance, where we will have lunch at Spork mill. Having tasted the lunch we will take the road to Spork forest above Stanovice. After an easy walk of approximately 20 minutes we will find, in impressive forest surroundings, a collection of statues and monumental baroque statues of hermits, saints and reliefs with bible motives from the master of Czech Baroque art, Matyas Bernard Braun from years 1725-1732. Here we can appreciate why he is called “the Czech Michelangelo”.
Return to Prague in the late afternoon.
